Improved Scoring of Satisfaction with Life Scale: Scoring of SWLS

The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), a 5-item instrument 7 response-categories per item, measures cognitive judgments of satisfaction one's life using summative scoring where higher score implies satisfaction. Discrete scores SWLS Likert-type items fail to satisfy equidistant property and do not consider distributions item or scale scores. paper gives an assumption-free method convert continuous following normal distribution is taken as sum such normally distributed proposed avoiding tied-scores facilitate better admissibility arithmetic aggregation, meaningful comparisons, ranking, classification individuals, assessment progress/deterioration across time undertaking parametric statistical analysis. In addition, it helps assess changes in successive time-periods for individual group drawing progress-paths test significance progress deterioration. Normality facilitates finding equivalent several satisfactions different formats score-ranges. Empirical illustration given hypothetical data. recommended enhance the utilization measurement along comparisons inferences.
